'Serial killer' Manik arrested in Cumilla, two murders solved

Police have arrested Abdul Wadud alias Manik, 25, whom they describe as a serial killer, and claimed to have solved two separate murder cases in Cumilla.

Manik, son of Aminul Islam alias Dulal of Ganipur village in Natherpetua union of Manoharganj upazila, was arrested along with several associates on Monday.

Additional Superintendent of Police Lutfor Rahman disclosed the information at a press briefing at the Cumilla police superintendent's office on Tuesday.

Police said they recovered the half-decomposed body of an 18-year-old auto-rickshaw driver, Md Mehedi, from the Atiabari area of Nangalkot on August 12. An investigation by Nangalkot police and the district Detective Branch led to the arrest of Manik, Shahed, Fahim and Selim.

According to police, the suspects confessed to killing Mehedi and stealing his auto-rickshaw. Manik later gave a confessional statement before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

In another case, 15-year-old auto-rickshaw driver Md Arman Hossain went missing from Nangalkot on August 24. Following an investigation based on his mobile phone, police recovered an auto-rickshaw and arrested Md Zobayer Hossain Sujon, Nur Alam and Md Gias Uddin.

Police said the suspects admitted to abducting and killing Arman. During interrogation, Manik also confessed to the murders of Mehedi and Arman. Acting on his information, police recovered Arman's body from a pond in Binayghar area of Manoharganj. Police said robbery of auto-rickshaws was the main motive behind both killings.

Police further said Manik had allegedly strangled a 17-year-old boy, Shahjahan alias Saimon, on September 2, 2024, with the intention of stealing his auto-rickshaw. 

The case is currently pending trial.
