Golapi Begum gets new home after years on pavement
After years of living in hardship on a pavement, Golapi Begum has finally received a permanent home.
The newly built house was formally handed over to her at a programme organised by Amra BNP Paribar at Ratanpur in Nabinagar upazila on Thursday. The key to the house and necessary documents were handed over to Golapi.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister and adviser to Amra BNP Paribar M Rashiduzzaman Millat attended the programme as the chief guest. He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman wanted BNP leaders and activists to remain engaged in humanitarian activities and work to address local problems.
The programme was chaired by Advocate Md Abdul Mannan, MP from Brahmanbaria-5 (Nabinagar) and president of Nabinagar upazila BNP.
Among others, Engineer Md Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamol, MP from Brahmanbaria Sadar and Bijoynagar-3 constituency, and Alhaj Sirajul Islam Siraj, administrator of Brahmanbaria District Council, attended the event.
According to the organisers, Tarique Rahman came to know about Golapi's plight while she was living on the pavement in Shahbagh during a programme marking the anniversary of the July uprising. He subsequently instructed his additional press secretary to take necessary steps to help her.
Receiving the new house, Golapi Begum became emotional and expressed gratitude to those involved.
"This has brought an end to my long years of uncertainty and hardship. I thank Allah and pray for Tarique Zia," she said.
