Human chain demands to halt new fossil fuel project in Mongla
A human chain was staged in Mongla of Bagerhat, demanding an end to the adoption of and financing for new fossil fuel-based projects, as well as calling for investment in renewable energy and a rapid, just energy transition.
This event was held on Friday morning on the banks of the Pashur River in the Kanainagar area of Mongla.
The demonstration was organized by Dhoritri Rokkhay Amra (DHARA), Pashur River Waterkeeper, and Waterkeepers Bangladesh as part of the 'Global Week of Action' program.
Organizers stated that the event was part of a worldwide campaign addressing climate and energy issues, leading up to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 81) and COP-31.
Md. Nur Alam Sheikh, a central leader of DHARA and the Pashur River Waterkeeper, presided over the human chain. Other speakers included DHARA leaders Asima Mondal and Brishti Sarkar, Pashur River Waterkeeper organizer Reshma Khatun, Fishermen's Association General Secretary Abdur Rashid Howlader, and Mehedi Hasan from Waterkeepers Bangladesh, among others.
Speakers at the event emphasized that to tackle the risks of climate change, Bangladesh must reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and rapidly transition toward clean and renewable energy.
They called for an end to financing for new fossil fuel projects and urged increased investment in renewable energy sources, such as solar power.
Highlighting the adverse effects on the Sundarbans' environment and public health, the speakers also demanded the closure of the Rampal coal-fired power plant.
They argued that environmental and public health considerations must be prioritized in energy development plans to protect the Sundarbans and the surrounding ecosystem.
In his speech, Md. Nur Alam Sheikh said, "We must stop financing fossil fuel projects and increase investment in renewable energy to combat the climate crisis. Ensuring a rapid and just energy transition is essential."
He further added that to ensure energy security and sovereignty, the use of renewable energy must be expanded as an alternative to import-dependent fossil fuels. According to him, initiatives should be taken to make Bangladesh more self-reliant in the energy sector by harnessing the potential of solar power.
At the human chain, speakers displayed banners and placards bearing various demands, such as "No new fossil fuel projects," "Increase investment in renewable energy," and "Ensure climate justice."
"Besides increasing the share of clean energy in Bangladesh's energy policy and investment plans, it is crucial to undertake initiatives for a just energy transition that takes into account the impacts on local communities, the environment, and the climate", he added.
