The historic achievement for Bangladesh. The Aerial Robotics Team (UART) of United International University (UIU) secured 4th place in the World at the Student Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS) 2026 Competition in Oklahoma, USA.
Participating in the prestigious international event for the first time, UIU’s UART achieved this remarkable success, marking a historic and proud moment for Bangladesh. The final round of the competition was held from September 14 - 17, 2026 at Skyway Range in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA, according to a press release.
The four-day competition brought together leading teams from renowned universities and higher education institutions from around the world. Despite challenging weather conditions, including high wind speeds and temperature-related difficulties, UIU’s UART demonstrated its innovative technologies, engineering expertise, and operational capabilities to secure 4th place globally. Notably, UIU’s Aerial Robotics Team became the first Bangladeshi team in the history of the SUAS Competition to secure a podium position.
Organized annually since 2003, the SUAS Competition is recognized as one of the world’s leading student competitions in unmanned aerial systems. In the preliminary round of this year’s competition, 81 teams from different countries participated; of these, 67 teams qualified for the final flying competition.
Subsequently, 64 teams received flight-readiness approval, while 58 teams ultimately conducted their flights. During the competition, participating teams faced extremely challenging conditions due to adverse weather. High wind speeds and temperature-related difficulties resulted in 21 teams experiencing crashes during flight operations.
Despite these adverse circumstances, UIU’s UART successfully completed its mission by making real-time strategic adjustments and technical adaptations, ultimately securing 4th place globally.
Teams from different universities around the world participated in the competition, including Cornell University, Monash University, The Ohio State University, the University of Maryland, and Warsaw University of Technology. Competing alongside these highly accomplished international teams, UIU’s UART, representing Bangladesh, secured 4th place, an achievement of significant importance for the country’s higher education, research, and technological capabilities. In this year’s competition, UART achieved full marks in the Safety Inspection and Rapid Response categories. Furthermore, UIU’s team earned the distinction of being the only team to complete the mission fully autonomously.
Behind UART’s success lies a long-term, collaborative effort involving extensive research, system design, engineering development, construction, testing, experimentation, and continuous refinement. The autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle developed by the team incorporates advanced capabilities, including autonomous navigation, aerial mapping, object detection, payload delivery, obstacle detection and avoidance, and multiple safety mechanisms.
The integrated application of these technologies enabled the team to complete its mission under highly challenging environmental conditions successfully.
This achievement once again proves that Bangladesh can lead the world when visionary leadership, faculty guidance, student talent, and institutional support come together. It will also inspire future generations to dream bigger and demonstrate Bangladesh’s capabilities on the global stage.
