Are McConaughey and Harrelson really brothers?
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have spent years wondering whether they might actually be brothers.
Now they have made a television comedy out of it.
The longtime friends and “True Detective” co-stars play fictionalised versions of themselves in Apple TV’s new series “Brothers”, which takes one of Hollywood’s stranger real-life rumours and imagines what might happen if it turned out to be true.
The eight-episode comedy, premiering Sept 23, begins with Harrelson moving his family into McConaughey’s Texas ranch after his daughter’s wedding falls apart.
Things become considerably more complicated when McConaughey’s mother, played by Holland Taylor, lets slip a decades-old secret: the two friends might share a father.
Apple describes the series as a comedy about friendship, family, fame and “the messy line between myth and reality”.
The myth, however, did not come from a writers’ room. McConaughey first publicly explained the story in 2023 on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast.
He said he, Harrelson and their families had been in Greece when his mother, Kay, told Harrelson: “I knew your dad.”
McConaughey said the emphasis she placed on “knew” immediately caught everyone’s attention.
The friends then compared the timing and found that Harrelson’s father had been free during a period when McConaughey’s parents were separated, he said.
Harrelson subsequently told Esquire that Kay McConaughey had told him she had had a brief relationship with his father that coincided with the period around Matthew’s conception.
“We haven’t done a test,” Harrelson said in the 2023 interview, while pointing to the similarities he has long noticed between himself and McConaughey.
So far, neither actor has publicly disclosed DNA evidence that would settle the question.
But their relationship already resembles family life in plenty of other ways.
At the Los Angeles premiere of “Brothers” this week, McConaughey joked that Harrelson has a habit of turning up at his Texas home unannounced and staying considerably longer than expected.
A visit that begins as a quick “howdy” can stretch to three months, McConaughey told People.
