Ed Sheeran returns to stage amid Palestine controversy

Pop superstar Ed Sheeran is set to return to the stage in Philadelphia today, amid controversy surrounding his US tour and his former opening act Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian remarks.

He will perform at Lincoln Financial Field today. A pro-Palestinian rally is also scheduled near the venue.

Macklemore was removed from Sheeran’s “US Loop Tour” earlier this week after he shouted “Free Palestine” during a performance in New Jersey. The move reportedly followed objections from owners of stadiums hosting Sheeran’s upcoming shows.

Sheeran has denied being involved in the decision, saying the tour promoter was responsible. Four supporting acts have since reportedly left the tour, including Sheeran’s backing band and musician Finneas.

Sheeran said that he does not want his concerts to become political forums. In an Instagram statement on Tuesday, he said he has personal views on the conflict in Gaza and the West Bank but chooses not to discuss them publicly.

Philadelphia police told AFP that there would be an appropriate police presence around the venue to ensure the safety of concertgoers, employees and local residents.
