MP Gazi Nazrul submits bail bond to court

Gazi Nazrul Islam, a Member of Parliament (MP) from Satkhira-4 constituency, has submitted his bail bond in court in connection with an attempted murder case filed with Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka. The politician, who was expelled from Jamaat-E-Islami, personally submitted the bail bond on Sunday before the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate AwladHossain Mohammad Jonaid in Dhaka.

Prosecution police Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam said GaziNazrul Islam had obtained an eight-week bail order from the High Court. He appeared before the court on Sunday and submitted his bail bond.

"After the bail period expires, he will surrender before the trial court and seek bail," Saiful Islam said.

ObaidurRahman, a driver, filed the case with Pallabi Police Station on July 21, alleging that he had been assaulted and strangled in an attempt to kill him after he objected to an alleged illicit relationship and over suspicions that videos had been leaked.

GaziNazrul Islam obtained an eight-week bail from the High Court on August 10 in connection with the case.

The other accused in the case are AminurRahman, 55; MasumBillah, 41; MottasimBillah, 25; and RakibulHasan, 30.

According to the case statement, ObaidurRahman lived at his sister's apartment in Rosegarden Tower in the Kalshi area of Pallabi and worked as the personal driver of MP GaziNazrul Islam.

The first information report (FIR) states that Nazrul Islam used to visit the apartment because of his family relationship with the residents. At one point, an alleged "illicit relationship" developed between Nazrul Islam and Obaidur's niece, according to the complaint.

After learning about the alleged relationship, Obaidur informed his family and requested Nazrul Islam to refrain from such conduct. The driver alleged that Nazrul Islam became angry and threatened to kill him.

The case statement further alleges that a group based in Moghbazar obtained some "objectionable videos" involving Nazrul Islam and Obaidur's niece and subsequently began blackmailing the MP. According to the complaint, Nazrul Islam suspected that Obaidur had secretly recorded the videos and handed them over to the media and the group.

The FIR alleges that, following the dispute, the other accused attacked Obaidur on July 14 "at the instruction" of Nazrul Islam.

According to the complaint, at around 11 a.m. that day, accused AminurRahman allegedly lured Obaidur into the drawing room of their residence. The other accused were allegedly present there and began beating him indiscriminately with sticks.

At one point, Obaidur alleged that Aminur threw him to the floor and attempted to kill him by strangling him.
