IEDCR to be equipped with modern equipment: Sakhawat
Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain on Monday said the government will take initiatives to equip the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) with modern equipment.
IEDCR has already demonstrated its capacity and it will be modernized for further strengthening the centre, he said while speaking as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the 2nd Bangladesh FETP Conference 2026 at IEDCR in Mohakhali here today, said a press release.
The minister said the IEDCR has not remained confined to words; it has proved its capabilities through its work. Its young researchers have been working day and night in research," he said.
Sakhawat said IEDCR's contribution to combating the coronavirus pandemic and measles outbreaks was undeniable.
Mortality rate in Bangladesh during the coronavirus pandemic remained lower than many other countries due to the tireless efforts of doctors and health workers, the minister said.
He said the government has started upgrading the 50-bed upazila health complexes into 150-bed to ensure quality healthcare for all,.
Sakhawat said the upgraded hospitals would also be equipped with necessary facilities including separate physiotherapy facilities for men and women, dialysis centres and breastfeeding centres.
Earlier, he attended a seminar at the College of Nursing at Mohakhali marking World Alzheimer's Day.
At the seminar, the minister pledged to formulate an integrated policy for prevention of Alzheimer's disease.
He said the government would take initiatives to allocate funds on a limited scale in the next budget for treatment and prevention of the disease.
IEDCR Director Dr. Quazi Ahmed Zaki presided over the programme.
