Chittagong Port takes steps to raise awareness for safe navigation
The Chattogram Port Authority has been conducting regular monitoring and awareness activities to ensure the safe and uninterrupted movement of local and foreign commercial vessels in the main navigational channel and outer anchorage areas of Chittagong Port, the country's principal maritime gateway.
As part of the ongoing initiative, a special awareness campaign was conducted on Saturday (September 19) from 9:00am to 1:00pm in the main navigational channel and outer anchorage areas of Chittagong Port to ensure safe navigation.
The Chattogram Port Authority's vessel Kandari-08, two local boats, one vessel and one boat of the Bangladesh Coast Guard provided overall support during the campaign.
During the campaign, local boatmen, fishermen and other concerned people were informed about the potential navigational risks caused by the installation of fishing nets in the navigational channel and along vessel routes. They were particularly warned to remove behundi nets and other illegal fishing nets immediately and refrain from placing any kind of nets along vessel routes in the future.
Awareness leaflets were distributed among local fishermen and boat operators to raise awareness about safe navigation. They were also urged to operate boats responsibly in designated vessel routes, navigational channels and outer anchorage areas, and to comply with the instructions of the port authority.
To ensure safe navigation at Chattogram Port and keep the navigational channel safe for vessel movement, coordinated activities by the Chattogram Port Authority, Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Coast Guard and other relevant agencies are continuing. Such awareness campaigns, monitoring and necessary measures will also continue in the future with the cooperation of local fishermen and boat operators.
In the interest of ensuring uninterrupted maritime trade and the safety of vessel movement, the Chattogram Port Authority has urged all boatmen, fishermen and vessel owners not to install any illegal fishing nets in the navigational channel or along vessel routes and to extend full cooperation to the port authority in ensuring safe navigation.
