An attempted gold-smuggling operation was foiled at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after Ansar members recovered approximately 2.5 kilograms, or 215 bhori, of gold from a Chinese national.

The gold was detected and recovered at around 2:30pm on Sunday in the Canopy-1 area of the airport, following the alertness and prompt action of Ansar personnel.

According to relevant sources, the Chinese national, who had arrived from China, was carrying five mugs/containers made of hill soil. Gold had allegedly been concealed inside the earthen containers using a special method involving chemicals.

While on duty, Ansar members Raihan Hossain and APC Saiful detected the suspicious items and immediately recovered the five earthen containers. PC Md. Anisur Rahman, who was on duty at the time, subsequently informed Omar Faruk, the Upazila Trainer responsible for the shift.

The Upazila Trainer later arrived at the scene and handed over the recovered items to the airport customs authorities. With the assistance of a goldsmith, customs officials burned the five earthen containers to separate the gold concealed inside them. Following the process, five gold bars/biscuits were recovered.

The total quantity of recovered gold was approximately 2.5 kilograms, equivalent to around 215 bhori.

The unusual attempt to smuggle gold by concealing it inside earthen containers through a chemical mixture was detected through the vigilance, sound judgment and prompt action of Ansar members.
