Girl dies of snakebite in Jhenaidah
A girl died after being bitten by a snake while visiting her maternal grandmother's house in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Mariam,07, daughter of Sajib Hossain of Puratan Bakharba village under Sarutia union of the same upazila.
Mariam's grandmother Rupali Begum said Mariam had arrived at her maternal grandparents' house with her mother several days ago.
Mariam and her mother slept on the same bed at night. In the early morning, Mariam asked her mother, "Mom, did you bite me?"
Her mother then noticed saliva coming from the girl's mouth. As her condition deteriorated, she was taken to a hospital in the morning.
Doctors administered antivenom, but Mariam could not be saved.
Dr Ehtesham Shahid, a physician at the emergency department of Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex, said Mariam was brought to the hospital on Tuesday morning in a critical condition.
"Two clear bite marks of a krait (kal keute) snake were found on her body. She was given antivenom, but she died at around 8am while undergoing treatment," he said.
