‘Splendor of Green’ showcases Tonmoy’s nature-inspired paintings at AFD
Artist Suborno Chakraborty Tonmoy’s first solo painting exhibition, ‘Splendor of Green’, opened at La Galerie of Alliance Française de Dhaka on Tuesday, showcasing artworks inspired by leaves, flowers and grass.
Curated by Sumon Wahed, the exhibition explores the varied forms, structures, colours and subtle rhythms of the natural world through Tonmoy’s paintings.
Eminent artist Jamal Ahmed, Honorary Professor of the Department of Drawing & Painting at the Faculty of Fine Art, Dhaka University, and Professor Sheikh Afzal Hossain of the same department attended the opening ceremony as distinguished guests.
Tonmoy’s engagement with nature developed during the COVID-19 lockdown, when restrictions on movement and a slower pace of human activity allowed him to observe his surroundings more closely.
The diversity of plants and the distinctive characteristics of leaves gradually drew his attention and became an important direction in his artistic practice.
His paintings are based on sustained observation of natural forms, particularly subtle variations in colour and structure. Through experimentation with colour combinations and layered shades, he seeks to translate the complexity he finds in leaves onto canvas.
The exhibition also reflects Tonmoy’s effort to encourage greater appreciation of the natural environment by drawing attention to details in nature that often remain unnoticed.
A Dhaka-based contemporary painter, Tonmoy completed his BFA in 2022 and MFA in 2024 from the Faculty of Fine Art, Dhaka University.
His practice focuses on nature, particularly the forms and colours of plants and leaves, and spans painting, drawing and research using oil, acrylic, watercolour and pencil.
He received the Media Best Award in Watercolor at the Annual Art Exhibition of the Department of Drawing & Painting, Dhaka University, in 2023 and the Grand Award at the 26th Berger Young Painters’ Art Competition in 2021.
The exhibition will remain open until Sep 29, from 3 pm to 9 pm daily, at La Galerie, Alliance Française de Dhaka, 26 Mirpur Road, Dhanmondi. Admission is open to all.
