Swapan appreciates UN role in Bangladesh's advancement
The Prime Minister's Political Adviser Zahir Uddin Swapon has praised the role of the United Nations (UN) in Bangladesh's development and advancement, saying the global organisation has made significant contributions to the country's socio-economic progress.
He made the remarks when UNDP Country Director for Bangladesh Stephen Rodrigues called on him at his office in Tejgaon on Thursday. During the meeting, they discussed various issues related to Bangladesh's development, governance, social progress and future cooperation between the country and the United Nations.
Swapon expressed appreciation for the UN's long-standing support for Bangladesh, particularly through development programmes aimed at strengthening institutions, reducing poverty, improving livelihoods and promoting inclusive growth. He said the partnership between Bangladesh and the UN has contributed to the country's development journey over the years.
The Prime Minister's political adviser also highlighted the importance of continued international cooperation in addressing emerging challenges. He said Bangladesh needs stronger partnerships with international organisations to achieve sustainable development and ensure that development benefits reach people across society.
Stephen Rodrigues briefed Swapon on the activities and priorities of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bangladesh. The discussion reportedly covered areas where further cooperation could help strengthen development initiatives and support national priorities.
The UNDP has been working with Bangladesh on a wide range of issues, including poverty reduction, democratic governance, climate resilience, digital transformation, gender equality and institutional development. Its programmes have sought to support government agencies and communities in addressing development challenges.
During the meeting, both sides stressed the importance of effective cooperation between Bangladesh and development partners. They also discussed the need for coordinated efforts to address economic, social and environmental challenges in the country.
