President calls for neutral, orderly, affordable migration system
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday called for effective measures to establish a neutral, orderly, affordable and transparent migration system.
He made the call when a delegation of the Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU), led by its Executive Director Dr Tasneem Siddiqui paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban this afternoon, said a President's Press Wing press release.
During the meeting, Dr Siddiqui briefed the President on RMMRU's 30 years of research and field-level activities and its achievements.
She said RMMRU has been conducting research and working at the policy level on labour migration, internal displacement, refugees and migrant workers for a long time.
The delegation also informed the President about an initiative to declare a 'Migration Decade' aimed at making greater use of the contributions of migrants.
The meeting discussed various issues, including ensuring safe and orderly migration for migrant workers, ensuring accountability of institutions providing migration-related services and promoting the positive contributions of migrants.
The delegation also discussed RMMRU's research and policy initiatives on internally displaced people, the formation of a national conference on displaced people and highlighting Bangladesh's experiences and initiatives on the issue internationally.
Dr Siddiqui invited the President to attend an event to be organized to mark RMMRU's 30th anniversary. The President assured her that he would attend the event.
RMMRU Adviser Prof C R Abrar, Deputy Executive Director Motasim Billah, Programme Director Marina Sultana and Senior Research Fellow Mahmudul Hasan Rocky were present as members of the delegation.
The President's Military Secretary and Secretary of the Public Division were also present.
