Teen-gangs in Cumilla: 451 out of 624 arrestees handed over to guardians
Police detained a total of 624 suspected members of juvenile gangs in separate drives carried out across Cumilla on Wednesday night. Of the arrestees, 451 were handed over to their guardians after questioning. The remaining 173 were sent to court for their involvement in drug-related offences and other crimes.
Lutfor Rahman, Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) of Cumilla district police, confirmed the matter to media on Thursday evening.
The simultaneous drives were conducted by the district police's 18 police stations and various other units to prevent juvenile gang members from becoming involved in crime and maintain law and order, police said.
According to police, the detainees include 75 people from Cumilla Kotwali model police station, 46 from Sadar South model police station, 50 from Burichang Police Station, 41 from Manoharganj police station, 59 from Daudkandi police station and 35 from Laksam police station. Police are also verifying information on detainees from the other police stations.
Police have recently stepped up surveillance and drives against teenage gangs in Cumilla following the killing of Ishiat Shahriar Opratim, the 13-year-old son of Comilla University teacher Nahida Begum.
