A high-level delegation of the Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) on Thursday paid a courtesy call on the Hon'ble President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh at Bangabhaban.
The delegation was led by BAB Chairman Abdul Hai Sarker, accompanied by Vice ChairmenRomo Rouf Chowdhury, Rashed Ahmed Chowdhury and Sharif Zahir, together with Chairmen ofvarious private commercial banks and senior BAB members, according to a press release.
BAB congratulated the Hon'ble President and expressed its appreciation for his contribution toBangladesh's democratic journey and commitment to strengthening the country's institutions andeconomy. During the meeting, the Bank Chairmen spoke individually on the overall challenges and opportunities facing the banking sector.
They highlighted the need to strengthen banks' capital base, asset quality and governance and expressed the view that no further new banking licences should be issued at this stage with priority instead given to strengthening and consolidating existing banks.
The delegation stressed that strong banks require a strong real economy.
They called for greaterinstitutional support for manufacturing and productive sectors, reliable gas and electricity supply, stronger law and order, faster enforcement and recovery mechanisms, and a stable and predictable environment forprivate-sector investment.
Banks play a central role in Bangladesh's economy, with over Tk 20 trillion in deposits and approximately Tk 1B trillion in loans and advances, while financing industries, SMEs, infrastructure and agriculture and facilitating the country's international trade and remittances.
BAB emphasised the importance of a strong and effective banking association working closely with the Government and Bangladesh Bank to safeguard the industry, strengthen confidence and support.sustainable economic growth.
The delegation reaffirmed the banking sector's commitment to supporting the Government's vision of taking Bangladesh towards a trillion-dollar economy, emphasising that a strong, stable and well-capitalised banking system will be essential to achieving this ambition.
