Tahmid Chowdhury receives Youth Leadership Award in Michigan
Tahmid Chowdhury has received the Michigan Democratic Party’s Best of the West Youth Leadership Award, recognizing his leadership, community engagement, organizing, and public service in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District.
The Youth Leadership Award recognizes young leaders for their involvement, service, and contributions within their communities and congressional districts. Tahmid received the award during the Michigan Democratic Party’s Best of the West event on September 17, 2026, at the JW Marriott Grand Rapids.
The award was presented to Tahmid by Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II, the Democratic nominee for Michigan Secretary of State, and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit, the Democratic nominee for Michigan Attorney General.
Also joining the presentation on stage were Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel, U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten, and Michigan Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor.
Tahmid is a resident of Warren, Michigan, and is originally from Sylhet, Bangladesh. He moved to the United States in 2020 and has since become actively involved in civic, community, and public-service efforts in Michigan. Tahmid currently serves as a Warren Crime Commissioner, contributing to community engagement and public-safety initiatives in the city.
Before moving to the United States, Tahmid served as a Project Coordinator with Bangladesh’s ICT Ministry, where he gained experience working on public-sector projects and community-focused initiatives.
Since making Michigan his home, Tahmid has been involved in community outreach, grassroots organizing, civic engagement, and efforts to encourage greater participation among young people. His work has extended throughout Macomb County and Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, with a focus on connecting communities, expanding civic participation, and creating opportunities for the next generation of leaders.
“I am truly honored to receive the Michigan Democratic Party’s Best of the West Youth Leadership Award,” Tahmid said. “This recognition is not just about me. It represents the mentors, organizers, volunteers, community leaders, friends, and so many others who have given me opportunities to learn, serve, and grow. I am grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey.”
Members of Michigan’s Bangladeshi American community also attended the event in support of Tahmid, including Bangladesh Association of Michigan (BAM) President Jabed Chowdhury and BAM Advisor Sumon Kobir.
Tahmid said the recognition further strengthens his commitment to community engagement, public service, and creating opportunities for young people to develop as future leaders.
“My goal has always been simple: show up, listen, work hard, and serve the community,” Tahmid said. “There is still much more work ahead, and I look forward to continuing that work alongside the incredible people and communities I have had the opportunity to serve.”
Tahmid thanked the Michigan Democratic Party and Michigan 10th Congressional District Democratic Party for the recognition and congratulated the other young leaders honored during the Best of the West event.
