Coast Guard seizes smuggled urea fertilizer in Chattogram
Coast Guard seized 48 tonnes of urea fertilizer that was being smuggled to Myanmar from Mirsharai, Chattogram.
Four trucks and a fishing boat involved in the operation were also seized, and three people were detained during the drive.
Acting on a tip-off, Coast Guard Station Mirsharai carried out the raid around 1am on Thursday near IchakhaliGhat, under Mirsharai Police Station.
According to the Coast Guard, the fertilizer was being transferred from the trucks onto a fishing boat when officials intervened. Three people were detained at the scene, and 960 sacks of urea-50 kg each, totaling 48,000 kg-were seized from the four trucks. The fertilizer's estimated market value is Tk 33.60 lakh.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander SabbirAlamSujan and MirsharaiUpazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Tanvirul Kader confirmed the details this afternoon.
Sujan said legal action was taken against the three detainees, and against the seized fertilizer, vehicles and boat, in the presence of an Executive Magistrate. He added that the Coast Guard's anti-smuggling operations would continue.
Tanvirul Kader said the three detainees were each fined Tk 1,400 under the Fertilizer Management Act and then released.
