Amit stresses solar power use to cut agri-production cost
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amiton Saturday stressed the need for using renewable energy like solar power to reduce agricultural production costs and ensure energy security.
Addressing a workshop titled "Strategy to Action: Implementation of the National Renewable Energy Development Strategy and National Rooftop Solar Programme" at the BRAC Learning Centre in Jashore, he said, "Increasing solar power use can significantly reduce farmers' production costs."
The state minister said farmers could use sunlight to operate irrigation systems instead of depending on diesel prices and availability, BSS reports.
Amit said the government plans to expand pilot solar projects of the Department of Agricultural Extension and support NGO initiatives through donor funding.
He said rooftop solar installation at government offices across Khulna division could make significant progress by December if initiatives are taken now.
He also urged government offices and district administrations to take initiatives to install rooftop solar panels, saying many institutions could complete the process within one to two months.
Jashore Deputy Commissioner Mohammad AshekHasan chaired the workshop, while joint secretary of power division Abu Hasnat Mohammad Arefin delivered the welcome address.
Stoyanka Stich, Energy Cluster Coordinator and Deputy Country Director for GIZ Bangladesh and additional secretary of the division Nur Ahmed attended the programme as special guests.
The workshop discussed renewable energy targets, financing, carbon credits, incentives, policy support and net metering under rooftop solar projects.
