PBI, NU launch training on forensic science in criminal investigations
A five-day training programme on the application of forensic science in criminal investigations began at the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Headquarters in Dhaka on Sunday, aiming to enhance investigators' skills in scientific crime investigation, evidence analysis and presentation of forensic evidence in court.
The training, titled "Application of Forensic Science in Criminal Investigations: From Crime Scene to the Courtroom", is being jointly organised by the PBI and the National University, said a press release of PBI.
The Institute of Forensic Science and Cyber Security (IFSCS), National University Bangladesh, is coordinating the programme.
PBI Additional Inspector General Md Mustafa Kamal inaugurated the training at the PBI conference room and chaired the opening session.
National University (NU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. ASM Amanullah attended the event as the chief guest.
Amanullah said forensic science has advanced significantly around the world and that the National University has introduced courses under its Institute of Forensic Science and Cyber Security to strengthen the field in Bangladesh.
He said graduates of the programme would be able to contribute to criminal investigations as well as variouscybersecurity-related issues.
The VC also emphasised practical education alongside theoretical learning to produce skilled graduates.
He went on saying that the NU is working with the PBI, Police Staff College and different divisions of the Armed Forces to make criminal investigations in Bangladesh more scientific and contribute to the administration of justice.
Speaking at the event, PBI Chief Additional Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mustafa Kamal said that although the PBI is a specialised investigation agency, investigators face various challenges in applying scientific and forensic techniques during investigations.
He said the training would further enhance the knowledge and skills of PBI personnel working in the field of forensic science.
The PBI chief also thanked the National University VC and all those involved in organisingthe training programme.
NU Treasurer Prof DrMdNazmulHossain attended the event as a special guest while Additional Superintendent of Police Samira Sultana (Training and Forensic), PBI Headquarters, Dhaka, moderated the programme.
A total of 30 trainees are participating in the five-day programme.
The training covers a range of topics, including the collection, preservation and analysis of forensic evidence from crime scenes, scientific investigation methods, applications of different branches of forensic science, the use of technology in investigations, and the admissibility and presentation of forensic evidence in court.
The programme is expected to provide participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills relevant to modern, science-based criminal investigations.
