BD wants to road network with Yunnan’s capital Kunming : Commerce Minister
Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said that, Bangladesh wants to direct road network from Chittagong to Yunnan’s capital Kunming through Myanmar. He made the remarks at the Ministry concerned conference room on Sunday while engaged a meeting with a high level delegation of the China’s Yunnan province.
He further said that, if it is possible to develop about 1200 kilometers road connection from Chittagong to Kunming through Myanmar, it could create opportunities for transporting goods within 24 hours and significantly reduce the cost of transporting goods between the two region. Commerce Minister however elaborately came up and mentioned again that Yunnan is an important potential market for Bangladesh and there has a lot of opportunities to boost export of Bangladesh. At that time Abdul Muktadir stressed the need to quickly implement the proposed free bonded warhouse and exhibition facilities to facilitate the entry of Bangladeshi products into the province’s 46.4 million people market.
At the meeting Yunnan province Executive Vice Governor Zhao Junmin said that, Bangladesh is the first country in South Asia to come under Yunnan’s special trade preference policy. However, initiatives have been taken to provide bonded warhouse, exhibition centers and different customs related benefits for Bangladeshi products and these will be implemented soon, he added. Moreover in line with the MoU signed between the Commerce Department of Yunnan and the EPB of Bangladesh and already a venue has been selected in Yunnan to display Bangladeshi products, he added again. He urged Bangladeshi entrepreneurs to come forward as soon as possible to utilize this facility.
In addition , the meeting also highlighted the importance of expanding direct cargo air links and the possibility of exporting jute and jute products, leather products, frozen fish, fruits and other agricultural products from Bangladesh to Yunnan as well as importing flowers, fertilizers and animal feed from Yunnan was also discussed. Commerce Secretary Md. Ataur Rahman Khan, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen and senior officials of the Commerce Ministry and the Chinese Embassy were also present at the event.
