Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) has unveiled a Tk7,245 crore financing initiative aimed at accelerating renewable energy adoption and creating new entrepreneurs in Bangladesh’s cottage and microenterprise sectors.
As part of the initiative, Tk500 crore will be allocated to expand rooftop solar power generation, while Tk5,000 crore in Bangladesh Bank-financed loans will support the creation of new entrepreneurs at the grassroots level, according to a PKSF press release.
The decisions were taken at a meeting of the PKSF Board of Directors held on Sunday at PKSF Bhaban-1, with PKSF Chairman Zakir Ahmed Khan in the chair.
PKSF Managing Director Md Fazlul Kader and other members of the Board of Directors attended the meeting.
The Board approved Tk5,000 crore in Bangladesh Bank-financed loans to promote entrepreneurship in the cottage and microenterprise sectors. The financing will target a wide range of productive activities, including technology-driven agriculture and agro-processing, manufacturing, services and value-chain-based businesses at the grassroots level.
According to PKSF, the initiative is designed to harness the skills, capabilities and productive potential of low-income communities by helping them establish new businesses and expand existing economic activities.
The programme is also expected to contribute to employment generation by creating opportunities for people at the local level to engage in productive enterprises.
The financing initiative comes as cottage and microenterprises continue to play an important role in Bangladesh’s rural and local economies, particularly by generating income and employment outside major urban centres.
Alongside entrepreneurship financing, PKSF has launched a specialised programme to promote rooftop solar power generation with support from a Tk500 crore government allocation.
Under the programme, the Board approved a specialised lending policy titled ‘Shouro Shokti’, under which loans will be provided to customers through PKSF’s partner organisations at an interest rate of 6 percent.
The programme is intended to facilitate greater investment in rooftop solar systems and expand the use of renewable energy among eligible customers.
The initiative is particularly significant as Bangladesh seeks to increase the contribution of renewable energy to its power mix and encourage more decentralised forms of electricity generation. Rooftop solar can also help businesses and households reduce dependence on conventional power sources while supporting the country’s broader clean-energy transition.
The Board also approved nearly Tk2,000 crore in loans for PKSF’s partner organisations to finance cluster-based microenterprises, general services, agriculture, programmes for the ultra-poor and other priority sectors.
The financing will allow partner organisations to extend credit and related support to entrepreneurs and communities engaged in a diverse range of economic activities.
Through the combined financing measures, PKSF is seeking to link access to finance with entrepreneurship development, employment generation, agricultural productivity and renewable energy adoption.
The initiatives also reflect an emphasis on expanding financial support beyond conventional business centres and reaching entrepreneurs and low-income communities at the grassroots level.
The rooftop solar financing programme, meanwhile, is expected to create a dedicated channel for clean-energy investment by offering loans at a relatively accessible interest rate through PKSF’s established network of partner organisations.
Together, the newly approved programmes represent a major expansion of PKSF’s financing activities, combining support for green energy with investment in small-scale businesses, agriculture and employment-generating enterprises.
PKSF said the initiatives are aimed at creating opportunities for low-income people to become entrepreneurs, strengthening local value chains and supporting more sustainable economic activities across the country.
