'Collective efforts can help overcome dengue crisis'


Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju on Wednesday said collective efforts could help overcome the  dengue crisis,and resolve various environmental problems facing the city.

"Dengue infection is one such challenge for us. 

If everyone works together, overcoming this crisis will become easier," he said while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion meeting here.

Saburunnnessa Women's Degree College organised the programme titled "Role of Teachers in Preventing Social Degradation and Raising Awareness about Dengue Prevention" on the college premises at Gagan Babu Road in the city this afternoon.

Thanking the college authorities for arranging the timely discussion, Manju said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had emphasised sports and cultural activities to reduce students' addiction to mobile phones.

He said families, educational institutions and the KCC all had responsibilities in preventing violence against women, eve-teasing and child marriage.
The KCC is also working to address these issues as part of its efforts to prevent social degradation, he added.

Emphasising the importance of public participation, Manju urged teachers and students to clean their educational institutions every Saturday and keep their home surroundings clean at a convenient time.

"If everyone comes forward from their respective positions, even difficult tasks can become easier. Such initiatives will also help keep the city clean," he added.

He also stressed the need to improve the quality of education and create a safe, student-friendly and education-oriented environment in educational institutions.

Professor Sheikh Jalal Uddin, a member of the college governing body, chaired the meeting.

Sekendar Jafrullah Khan Satchu, president of the governing body of Saburunnnessa Secondary Girls' School, former KCC councillor Md Gias Uddin Bony, and social worker Yusuf Harun Majnu addressed the programme as special guests.

College Principal Mariam Siddika delivered the welcome address.

Teachers, students and guardians of the college attended the meeting.
