The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Thursday strongly protested and condemned the use of a photograph of one of its soldiers in an article titled "Abu Sayeed killing was a crime, but was it a crime against humanity?" published by a foreign-run online platform operating in Bangladesh.
In a protest statement issued on Thursday evening, the BGB said the photograph had been used in the article despite having no connection with its subject matter, BSS reports.
"Such use of the photograph was irresponsible and misleading and has damaged the image and reputation of the BGB," the statement said.
The BGB said it viewed the use of the photograph as indicative of an anti-BGB attitude and part of what it described as a deep-rooted conspiracy against the paramilitary force.
"Despite being a foreign-funded organisation, the concerned platform should have maintained international standards and exercised greater professional care while using photographs of a traditional institution like the BGB," the statement added.
The BGB called for the immediate removal of the photograph from the article, publication of a correction and a visible expression of regret to dispel any confusion among readers.
It also urged the concerned authorities to ensure proper verification of information and exercise the highest level of professional caution in using BGB photographs, identity or insignia in the future.
The force said it reserves the right to take necessary and appropriate measures against any attempt to tarnish its image, improperly associate it with any controversial incident or portray it in a misleading manner.
At the same time, the BGB said it expects accuracy of information, relevance of photographs and responsible conduct alongside freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
