A total of 354 normal deliveries have been successfully performed at Birganj Upazila Health Complex in Dinajpur over a period of nine months.
The natural childbirth without the need for a Caesarean section is steadily rising at the facility.
According to the data, the monthly breakdown of normal deliveries is as follows: 51 in January, 51 in February, 36 in March, 33 in April, 47 in May, 29 in June, 31 in July, 33 in August, and 43 in September, totaling 354 cases.
It has been reported that a birth certificate is issued by the health complex immediately after the baby is born, facilitating easy birth registration and other related procedures.
Medical staff said that with continued cooperation from everyone, the number of normal deliveries could increase manifold.
Hospital authorities attribute this success to the dedication and competence of the doctors, nurses, and midwives at Upazila Health Complex.
The number of normal deliveries is rising due to the provision of prenatal and postnatal care and counseling for expectant mothers. Simultaneously, trust in government healthcare services is growing among pregnant women.
Mothers who underwent normal delivery at the complex shared that although they were initially apprehensive, the assurances from field workers and doctors encouraged them to come to the hospital, where they experienced safe, natural births. This not only saved them money but also ensured the well-being of both the mother and the newborn.
Birganj Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Afroze Sultana said, "The hospital employs skilled midwives to reduce maternal mortality rates and ensure safe normal deliveries."
He expressed optimism that the number of normal deliveries will increase in future.
Contacted, Dr. Md. Golam Rasul Rakhi, the acting Civil Surgeon of Dinajpur district, said that Dinajpur Medical College Hospital is located far from Birganj Upazila, and many destitute patients requiring Caesarean sections lack the funds to undergo the procedure in Dinajpur or elsewhere.
He noted that if the government were to appoint a doctor capable of performing Caesarean sections at the Birganj Upazila Health Complex, the facility could offer both normal deliveries and Caesarean sections. This will eliminate the need for patients requiring Caesarean sections to travel to other clinics, thereby reducing the risk of death associated with the procedure.
