Police recovered the body of a retired schoolteacher from a locked house in Bhatikhana area of Barishal city early Thursday.
The body of Amena Khanam, 65, a resident of Mehendiganj upazila, was found with her hands and legs tied with pieces of cloth inside a second-floor flat of a building in Khalpar area on Rokeya Azim Road.
According to police and local people, Amena had retired from a government primary school and had been living alone in the rented flat for about a year.
Tenants living beside the flat noticed a foul smell coming from the house on Wednesday night and informed Rina Begum, wife of the house owner.
She then informed Amena's son Rifat, who works at a private bank in Dhaka.
Rifat informed police, who went to the house and opened the lock around 4:30am. They found Amena's body lying on a bed with her hands and legs tied.
Rina said that Amena had been living in the house for nearly a year and lived alone.
Deputy Commissioner of Barishal Metropolitan Police Sushanta Sarker said that police went to the scene after receiving a call from Amena's son.
'The house was locked. After opening the lock, we found her body inside with her hands and legs tied,' he said.
Police sent the body to the morgue of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
They were investigating the incident and trying to identify and arrest those involved in the incident, he added.
