The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Friday arrested Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman over allegations of creating disorder and obstructing government officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
DMP's Additional Commissioner (DB) Shafikul Islam confirmed his arrest.
Based on specific intelligence, a DB team conducted a drive at around 6:15 pm and arrested him, the DB chief said.
The arrest follows a case filed against Akhtaruzzaman at Airport Police Station on Friday under several sections of the Code of Criminal Procedure by Dhaka Airport Security Officer Md Shahriar Alam Sajib on charges of obstructing government duties, creating disorder at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, and physically assaulting a security official.
Before his arrest, Akhtaruzzaman said on Facebook that DB police were taking him into custody and posted a video message.
In the video, he asked people to pray for him,
saying he hoped to sacrifice his life while working for the rights of the people, particularly to protect the interests of expatriate Bangladeshis.
"I am with the struggle for people's rights and will remain so for the rest of my life," he said, adding that he would continue to stand by the people and work for them as long as he was alive.
