Bangladesh finish 7th in Asian Games

Bangladesh finished their Asian Games men's hockey campaign in seventh place after beating Thailand 3-0 in the place-deciding match held at Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Japan on Saturday.

Bangladesh took the lead in the third minute when Roman Sarker found the net, giving Peter Gerhard's side a 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Bangladesh continued to dominate and doubled the lead in the 27th minute through Amirul Islam, who converted a penalty corner.

Ashraful Islam sealed the victory in the 53rd minute, scoring from a penalty stroke to make it 3-0.

Thailand failed to find a way back into the match as Bangladesh held on to secure a comfortable victory and finish seventh in the tournament.

With the win, Bangladesh ended their Asian Games hockey campaign on a winning note.

Earlier, Bangladesh women finished ninth in the Asian Games hockey competition after defeating Singapore 2-1 in a penalty shootout in the ninth-12th place playoff at Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Japan on Friday.

The match ended 1-1 in regulation time before Bangladesh kept their nerve to win the shootout 2-1.

Bangladesh made an attacking start and took the lead in the 10th minute when Irin Akter Riya scored a fine field goal.

Bangladesh maintained their 1-0 lead until the end of the first half.

The second half saw Singapore step up their pressure. Bangladesh were reduced to 10 players in the 42nd minute when Lima Akter was shown a yellow card and temporarily suspended.

Taking advantage of the numerical advantage, Singapore drew level in the 44th minute when Tou Li Min converted a penalty corner.

Neither side could find the winning goal in the remaining minutes, sending the match into a penalty shootout.

Bangladesh then held their nerve to edge Singapore 2-1 in the shootout and secure ninth place in the tournament.
