Prominent businessman Gaziul Haque no more

M. Gaziul Haque, Chairman of MGH Group and a prominent businessman, has passed away. A pioneer of Bangladesh's modern shipping industry and a veteran businessman who played an important role in the development of Eastern Bank, he died at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on Monday (October 5, 2026). He was 92 years old.

According to a statement from MGH Group, GaziulHaque passed away at 1:10 p.m. on Monday. His funeral prayer (Janazah) was held after Maghrib prayers at Azad Mosque in Gulshan.

Born in 1934, GaziulHaque belonged to a generation of Bangladeshi entrepreneurs who began their careers in the trading and shipping sectors before independence. They later played a significant role in developing modern shipping infrastructure in the country while also paving the way for partnerships between local businesses and international companies.

He completed his studies at Chittagong Government College. He then enrolled at the University of Dhaka in 1955 and, in the same year, began his professional career at the British company Bird & Co. Ltd. Rising through the ranks, he became the company's Managing Director in 1976. At the time, the company operated under the name Birds Bangladesh Limited.

In 1980, GaziulHaque left the company and embarked on his career as an entrepreneur. He joined the Chittagong-based shipping company Aquamarine Limited as a partner. A decade later, together with his business partner, he established Maersk Bangladesh Limited as a joint venture with the Copenhagen-based international shipping giant Maersk Line.

He served as chairman of the joint venture until 1997. He was one of the pioneers in establishing a formal local partnership between Bangladesh and one of the world's largest shipping companies.
