TIB condemns attack on journalists at RU

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has strongly condemned and expressed deep concern over the armed attack and death threats against media workers at Rajshahi University (RU) with a call for justice irrespective of the political identity or influence of those involved in the attack.

In a statement issued on Monday (5 October), TIB also urged the leadership of ruling BNP and opposition Jamaat-e-Islami to take effective measures to reform and discipline their parties and affiliated organisations to end violent struggles for dominance.

According to media reports, an attack allegedly involving leaders and activists of the Chhatra Dal took place at RU on the night of 4 October, leaving at least 10 people, including four journalists, injured. The university proctor admitted to the administration's failure, while police reportedly fled the scene out of fear.

The university administration formed a five-member investigation committee and filed a case today, while Chhatra Dal also formed an internal investigation committee.

Journalists have demanded the arrest of those involved and the resignation of relevant university officials.

TIB Executive Director DrIftekharuzzaman said those responsible for the attack, as well as their accomplices and patrons, must face exemplary accountability through an impartial investigation regardless of their political identity or influence.

"Justice must be ensured for the journalists and students who were attacked," he said, adding that injured people must receive proper treatment and the safety of journalists and students must be ensured.
