The Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized a cargo boat carrying a large consignment of Indian cumin allegedly brought into the country by evading customs duties in Patuakhali.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the information on Monday morning.
According to him, the Coast Guard Station Patuakhali conducted a special operation based on a tip-off at around 2:00am on October 4 in the Palpara area along the Lohalia River under Patuakhali Sadar Police Station.
During the operation, Coast Guard personnel searched a suspicious cargo boat and seized it along with approximately 21,000 kilograms of cumin, allegedly smuggled into Bangladesh from India without paying applicable customs duties and taxes. The seized cumin was estimated to be worth around Tk 1.575 crore.
The smugglers fled after sensing the presence of Coast Guard personnel, and no one could be arrested during the operation.
The seized cumin and cargo boat were handed over to Patuakhali Sadar Police Station for further legal action.
Lieutenant Commander Sujon further said the Coast Guard would continue conducting such operations in the future to prevent smuggling.
