Nepal's Election Commission has sought technical assistance from Bangladesh regarding its IT-supported postal voting system to introduce it during Nepal's upcoming provincial elections.
Visiting Nepal's Election Commissioner Dr. Rajiv Subba said this after a meeting with the Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh on Wednesday, BSS reports.
Dr. Rajiv Subba said, "We are working on introducing an 'out-of-country' ballot voting system for the upcoming provincial elections. We are trying to understand how Bangladesh achieved the success in this regard."
He noted that the context in Bangladesh is quite similar to that of Nepal, a large number of Bangladeshis live. Therefore, we are trying to understand the Bangladesh Model in using such technology for our citizens living outside the country.
He further mentioned, From Bangladesh's experience, we have learned which mistakes should be avoided, giving us an added advantage. Since this technology has already been tested, we can expedite certain stages of the process.
He informed that they have between 20 and 40 million expatriate voters, noting that voter awareness could be a challenge in this regard.
A six-member delegation from the Nepalese Election Commission held the meeting with Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) at the Nirbachon Bhaban in the capital.
Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin led the meeting which was attended by four other commissioners and senior EC officials.
The Nepalese delegation included Election Commissioners Dr. Janaki Kumari Tuladhar and Dr. Rajiv Subba, Secretary to the Nepalese Election Commission Krishna Prasad Kapri, Senior Computer Officer Anup Naupane, Deputy Attorney Kamala Kafle and UNDP representative Prabhat Kumar.
