Bangladesh reaffirms stance for prohibiting chemical weapons

Bangladesh on Thursday reiterated its support for The Hague-based Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) as it staged a three-day international training event on the peaceful and responsible uses of chemistry in the capital, an ISPR statement said.

"The safe use of chemistry will not only ensure our internal security rather will confirm international peace and order," the statement quoted Commodore Md Monir Uddin Mallik as saying at the concluding session of the event.

OPCW, an inter-governmental body having 193 member states, staged the "International Training and Education Programme on Peaceful Uses of Chemistry for Youth-2026" in collaboration with Bangladesh National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention (BNACWC) at Dhaka's Hotel Radisson Blu.

BNACWC operates under Armed Forces Division (AFD).

Malik, who is the BNACWC's member secretary, reassured Bangladesh's overall support for all OPCW initiatives.

According to the ISPR the event brought together 17 participants from Bangladesh and seven other Asian countries and five local and international trainers. The training focused on responsible chemical practices, reducing risks from dual-use chemicals, strengthening safety culture, building cross-border networks and promoting ethical values among future scientists. Malik distributed certificates among the participants and trainers.
