Swapon calls for unity to make  democracy sustainable

Prime Minister's Political Adviser Zahir Uddin Swaponon Saturday called upon all  pro-democracy forces to work together to make the parliamentary system effective and ensure that the democracy achieved through sacrifices becomes meaningful and sustainable.

"The democracy achieved through the blood of martyrs must be given an institutional shape by establishing an effective legislature," he said while addressing a commemorative meeting as a special guest at the Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium of the Jatiya Press Club in the afternoon, BSS reports.

The Shaheed Jihad Smriti Parisha dorganised the meeting in memory of Shaheed Jihad, who was killed during the anti-autocracy movement in the 1990s.

BNP Acting Secretary General Advocate RuhulKabirRizvi addressed the programme as the chief guest,  while Shaheed Jihad Smriti Parishad President Aman Ullah Aman presided over the meeting.BNP Joint Secretary General and lawmaker Khairul Kabir Khokon moderated the  programme.

Mostafizur Rahman Babul, MP, and former lawmakers Nazimuddin Alam, Habibur Rahman Habib and Khandaker Lutfor Rahman also spoke at the event.Swapon said the primary responsibility of political activists was not limited to participating in movements and struggles, but also included ensuring the fundamental rights of the people. Recalling the sacrifices of Shaheed Jihad, Abu Sayeed and Mughdho, he said there was no alternative to implementing the 31-point,programme announced by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to build a modern, science-oriented state.

He also stressed the need to accelerate Bangladesh's progress in artificial intelligence and information technology to keep pace with the world.
