BGB seizes smuggled goods worth Tk 254.2 crore in September

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled goods worth over Tk 254.20 crore during drives in border areas and other parts of the country in September.

According to a BGB press release issued on Saturday, the seized goods were valued at Tk 254 crore 20 lakh 58 thousand.

The confiscated items included 3.438 kg of gold, 18,872 sarees, 3,808 pieces of three-piece dresses, shirt pieces, blankets and other clothing items, 2,528 ready-made garments, 3,09,246 cosmetic products, 20,87,809 pieces of fireworks, 713 mobile phones, 6,293 mobile phone displays and 9,407 mobile phone parts.

The seized goods also included 46,812 kg of cumin, 20,578 kg of garlic, 8,357 kg of sugar, 20,323 kg of fertiliser, 1,40,217 kg of coal, 5,035 kg of betel nuts, 3,611 kg of tea leaves, 5,036 cubic feet of stone and 1,912 cubic feet of  timber.

Besides, BGB seized 15,40,008 shrimp fry, 4,33,260 packets of chocolate, 7,00,339 pieces of various medicines, 89,600 pieces of electrical resistors and medical items, and various other products.

The force also recovered firearms and explosives, including two machine guns, three rifles, six locally made or foreign pistols, two other weapons, three magazines, 64 rounds of ammunition, 52 kg of explosive sulphur and 4 kg of other explosive materials.

During the month, BGB seized a large quantity of narcotics, including 46,94,605 yaba tablets, 58 grammes of heroin, 1,418 bottles of Phensedyl, 11,925 bottles of foreign liquor, 165.25 litres of locally made liquor, 716 cans of beer and 1,715 kg of cannabis.

The other seized narcotics included 4,989 bottles of Eskuf syrup, 8,524 bottles of various syrups, 2,018 Viagra-type tablets, 1,83,370 packets of bidis and cigarettes, and 2,15,586 various intoxicating tablets.

BGB also seized six trucks or covered vans, eight pickup trucks, three private cars or microbuses, 103 CNG-run vehicles, easy bikes, auto-rickshaws and handcarts, 74 motorcycles, 31 bicycles or vans, and 69 boats.

During the operations, 218 alleged smugglers were detained for their suspected involvement in drug trafficking and other smuggling activities along the border.

The force also detained 58 Bangladeshi nationals, seven Indian nationals and 201 Myanmar nationals for illegally crossing the border. Legal action was taken against those detained, the press release said.
