'Midwives play a pivotal role  in ensuring lifesaving healthcare'

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain Bokul has said that, midwives play a crucial role in ensuring safe, dignified and lifesaving healthcare for mothers and newborns. 

He made the remarks in Berlin,the capital Germany on Sunday while addressing a roundtable discussion on 'South South Partnerships in Midwifery Acceleration and Health Security: From Crisis to Resilience'. 

The Minister said,"Investment in midwives is not an expense, but it is play as an effective national investment to reduce maternal and newborn mortality as well as overall health expenditure. Moreover, the infrastructure of country's 62 educational institutions  is being modernized to improve the quality of midwifery education."

"Initiatives have been taken to introduce hands on training, simulation based education and technology based education systems, he added. 

At that time Minister mentioned that, the government's commitment to gradually increase the  allocation of the health sector to 5 percent of GDP and to appoint 25 thousands midwives within the next few years," he said.

SakhawatHossain said again that, regional cooperation is very important in the face of  health workers crisis. Bangladesh is strengthening the knowledge exchange, teacher exchange and joint training activities with Nepal and Pakisthan, he added again. 

He also appreciated the contribution of development partners especially the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in expanding maternal health and reproductive health services.In addition, Bangladesh government is committed to continuing to invest and boost the skills of midwives with a view to protect women, children and the future of the country's economy, Minister added.
