DU to observe Mourning Day on October 15

Dhaka University (DU) will observe its Mourning Day on October 15 in memory of the victims of the tragic accident that took place at Jagannath Hall on the night of October 15, 1985.

A total of 40 people including 26 students and 14 guests and employees lost their lives while many others were injured in the tragic incident.

The day is observed every year to pay rich tributes to the memory of the deceased students, employees and guests. All classes and administrative activities of the university will remain suspended on the day.

The day's programme will begin at 6:00 am with the hoisting of black flags atop all main buildings, halls, and hostels of the university, flying the university flag at half-mast, and wearing black badges.

At 7:30 am, a mourning rally led by DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam will start from the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla and  proceed to the Jagannath Hall Memorial, where wreaths will be placed, followed by a minute of silence.

A discussion meeting will be held at 8:00 am at the TV Room of the October Memorial Building.

 Special prayers for followers of Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian faiths will be held at the Jagannath Hall premises from 9:00 am to 10:00 am.
Additionally, special prayers (Doa) seeking peace for the departed souls will be offered at the university central mosque, MasjidulJami'a, as well as hall mosques after Asr prayers.

An exhibition featuring oil paintings and documents related to the deceased will also be held at Jagannath Hall from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, organised by the hall administration.
