President urges media unity to safeguard professional interests

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgiron Sunday called upon journalists and media workers to remain united to protect their professional interests and rights.

The President made the call when a 44-member delegation of Thakurgaon Journalists Forum, Dhaka, led by its President ManikMuntasir and General Secretary Delwar Hossain, paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban this afternoon, President's Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam told BSS.

The President said, "Without ensuring job security, a fair pay structure and other facilities for media workers, it will be difficult to create an environment for independent, impartial and responsible journalism,"

He called upon media workers to work together, putting aside all divisions, to protect their professional interests.

"Journalists play a very important role in the welfare of the state and society," he said.

In this connection, he said, "Journalists must be fearless and responsible in reporting the truth and bringing irregularities,
 corruption and injustice to public attention."

Mirza Fakhrul Islam noted that mainstream media and professional journalists could play an important role in preventing yellow journalism, misinformation and disinformation on social media.

Expressing love and affection for his hometown Thakurgaon, the President said, "I want to remain connected to the roots from which I came and from which I grew up."

He sought active cooperation of journalists to keep Thakurgaon free from communal clashes and drugs.

The President congratulated the forum's members for serving in important positions at various national media outlets and expressed gratitude for playing a positive role in the development of the country and Thakurgaon and standing alongside the struggle to establish people's rights.

He urged the forum's members to be vigilant on various development activities undertaken in the district and highlight the district's successes and achievements at the national level.

During the meeting, leaders of Thakurgaon Journalists Forum congratulated MirzaFakhrul Islam Alamgir on assuming the office of President.

They apprised the President of various professional problems and challenges and sought government cooperation in establishing journalists' fair rights and ensuring necessary training.

They also outlined the necessity for a permanent office for the organisation and emergency medical treatment for seriously ill members.

The President assured them of necessary cooperation and wished prosperity for the organisation and its members.

Dhaka Stream CEO SohelRana, BSS Chief News Editor (CNE) Md. Manikul Azad, ProthomAlo journalist TuhinSaifullah, BSS journalist MahaburAlamShohag, Star News Senior Producer MahbubAlam Raj, Kalbela journalist Shafiqul Islam and Channel 24 journalist MasudurRahmanRana spoke at the event on behalf of the forum.

President's Military Secretary, Secretary and Press Secretary, among other senior Bangabhaban officials, were present at the meeting.
