A three-day training programme on multimedia journalism, artificial intelligence (AI) and fact-checking, organised by the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB) for journalists from Khulna district and Khulna University, concluded in Khulna on Wednesday.
Certificates were distributed among 70 journalists who received training under the program. The closing ceremony was held in the afternoon at the HumayunKabirBalu Auditorium of Khulna Press Club, with Khulna University Vice-Chancellor Professor DrRezaulKarim attending as the chief guest.
PIB Director General FarukWasif addressed the event online as a special guest. Associate Professor Md Mahdi-Al-MuhtasimNibir of Khulna University's Mass Communication and Journalism Discipline, who is also an adviser to the Khulna University Journalists' Association, attended as another special guest.
The program was chaired by MostafaSarwar, president of Khulna Press Club and editor of the daily Probartan. Professor RezaulKarim distributed certificates among the participants at the closing ceremony.
Addressing the event, FarukWasif stressed the importance of responsible journalism in maintaining peace and stability in the country.
"Fact-checking is essential for protecting both journalism and the public," he said, adding that PIB had been conducting training programmes for journalists across the country to strengthen their fact-checking skills.
Professor RezaulKarim said journalists needed to develop soft skills to expand their professional capabilities and create opportunities for themselves in different fields.
He also urged journalists to use artificial intelligence thoughtfully and strategically in their professional work.
Chairing the session, MostafaSarwar said AI was making journalists' work easier, but warned that uncritical reliance on AI-generated information without proper verification was allowing inaccuracies to enter news reports and putting journalism at risk.
The training programme began on October 12 at two venues. At Khulna Press Club, 30 journalists from Khulna district participated in the training, while 35 members of the Khulna University Journalists' Association attended sessions at the IQAC Training Room on the second floor of Professor DrGolamRahman Administrative Building at Khulna University.
The hands-on training covered multimedia storytelling, mobile journalism, the use of AI tools in journalism and modern techniques for identifying fake news.
