Early winter vegetables flood Naogaon markets

Early winter vegetables have started arriving in markets across the district in abundance, keeping prices at a relatively affordable level for consumers as farmers cultivate the seasonal crops on 3,355 hectares of land this year.

A wide variety of vegetables, including cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, red amaranth, alabar spinach, bitter gourd, eggplant, beans, bottle gourd, radish, okra, cucumber and ash gourd, are now available in markets in Naogaon district town and rural areas, BSS reports.

A visit to different markets showed that cauliflower is selling at Taka 80 per kilogram (Kg), spinach at Taka 100, gourd at Taka 40, red amaranth at Taka 40, malabar spinach at Taka 40, bitter gourd at Taka 80, eggplant at Taka 100 and beans at Taka 100 per kg.

Okra is selling at Taka 60 per kg, radish at Taka 50 and cucumber at Taka 60. Bottle gourds are priced at Taka 30-40 each, while cabbages are selling at Taka 40-50 per piece.

Abdur Rashid, who came from Sultanpur to shop at Naogaon's Baro Bazar on Tuesday afternoon, told BSS that winter vegetables were available in sufficient quantities and their prices were largely within consumers' purchasing capacity.

"Prices are somewhat lower this year than they were at the same time last season," he said.

Abul Kalam Azad, a resident of Naogaon par, expressed a similar view, saying the current prices were beneficial for both farmers and consumers, as growers were receiving fair prices while buyers were also satisfied.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Naogaon Md Monjur Rahman told BSS that the district's naturally fertile soil was favourable for vegetable cultivation, resulting in good production.

Farmers are getting good prices by cultivating early winter vegetables, he said, adding that a total of 3,355 hectares of land had been brought under early winter vegetable cultivation in the district this year.

According to the DAE, the upazila-wise area under early winter vegetable cultivation is 540 hectares in NaogaonSadar, 15 hectares in Raninagar, 35 hectares in Atrai, 380 hectares in Badalgachhi, 670 hectares in Mahadevpur, 310 hectares in Patnitala, 250 hectares in Dhamoirhat, 130 hectares in Sapahar, 120 hectares in Porsha, 600 hectares in Manda and 305 hectares in Niamatpur.

Mahadevpur has the largest area under early winter vegetable cultivation, followed by Manda and NaogaonSadar, the DAE data showed.
