The Department of Law at Rajshahi University (RU) is set to organise a two-day international conference for the second time on October 30–31. The conference will be held at the university’s Tajuddin Ahmad Senate Building, where researchers from nine countries, including Bangladesh, will present their research papers on various contemporary legal issues.

The theme of the conference is “Sovereignty, Humanity and Law in the Contemporary World.” Chief Justice of Bangladesh Obaidul Hassan Chowdhury is expected to attend the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest. RU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Faridul Islam will preside over the event.

Researchers from different universities in Bangladesh, along with scholars from Australia, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, South Sudan, Greece and Namibia, will participate in the conference. A total of 125 research papers will be presented across 25 sessions at seven venues.

The papers will cover a wide range of topics, including international criminal law, artificial intelligence and law, children's rights, constitutional rights, environment and climate, human rights, criminology and victimology, land rights, labour rights, cyber law, refugee rights, personal law, human trafficking and smuggling, women's rights, and international humanitarian law.

At the plenary session, Emeritus Professor Dr M. Rafiqul Islam of Macquarie University, Australia, will deliver the keynote paper. The discussants will include Professor Dr Mary George of the University of Malaya, Malaysia; Professor Dr Nakib Mohammad Nasrullah of the Department of Law at the University of Dhaka; and Professor Dr Abu Naser Mohammad Wahid of RU's Department of Law.
The closing ceremony is expected to be attended by Acting Chief Justice of Bangladesh Md Rezaul Haque; Justice Syed Md Dastagir Hossain; Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) member and University of Chittagong Department of Law Professor Dr Muhammad Shaheen Chowdhury; Bangladesh Accreditation Council member Md Emdadul Haque; retired Justice Emdadul Haque; and RU Department of Law professors Dr Anisur Rahman and Dr Mohammad Abdul Hannan.

In addition, Justice S. M. M. Emdadul Haque of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh will attend as a special guest. RU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Md Abdul Alim and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr Md Mamunur Rashid will attend as guests of honour.

Professor Dr Begum Asma Siddika of the Department of Law will deliver the welcome address at the inaugural ceremony. Professor Dr Saeeda Anju, also from the department, will deliver the vote of thanks.

Professor Dr Begum Asma Siddika, convener of the conference and a faculty member of RU's Department of Law, said researchers from nine countries, as well as students from different universities, had submitted their research papers for the conference. She added that students from Bangladesh and other participating countries had also confirmed their participation.

“The conference will create opportunities for knowledge exchange among researchers and students from different countries. They will be able to share their research findings and experiences with one another,” she said.

She further said the conference would help students gain a clearer understanding of their respective positions and provide opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills, which would positively contribute to their future research and professional careers.
