Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2027 has been scheduled to begin on January 7.
The month-long event will continue until February 6.
This year's fair began on February 26, having been postponed from its traditional February 1 start due to the general elections.
Bangla Academy announced the revised opening date in a media statement on Sunday, though it did not specify the reason for bringing the schedule forward.
The decision was taken on October 13 during a meeting at Bangla Academy, chaired by Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury.
According to the statement, administrators and their representatives were present at the meeting.
The Amar Ekushey Book Fair is one of the most significant cultural events in Bangladesh. Held annually in February, the fair brings together writers, publishers, students, teachers, researchers, and book lovers from different parts of the country. Organized by Bangla Academy, it is not merely a marketplace for books but also a symbol of the nation's language, history, culture, and intellectual heritage. The fair plays an important role in promoting reading habits, developing Bengali literature, and preserving the spirit of the Language Movement.
The historical significance of the Ekushey Book Fair is closely connected with the Language Movement of 1952. On February 21 of that year, students and ordinary people protested against the attempt to establish Urdu as the only state language of Pakistan. Several protesters were killed when police opened fire on demonstrators demanding recognition of Bangla. Their sacrifice became a turning point in the history of Bangladesh and strengthened the people's determination to protect their mother tongue. The book fair commemorates these language martyrs and reminds the nation of the value of linguistic rights and cultural identity.
The fair began on a small scale in 1972 when publisher Chittaranjan Saha displayed books near the premises of Bangla Academy to honor the language martyrs. Gradually, other publishers joined the initiative, and Bangla Academy became involved in organizing the event in 1978. In 1984, the fair was formally established as Amar Ekushey Granthamela. Over the years, it has developed into the country's largest annual literary gathering. Today, the fair is held at Bangla Academy and the adjoining Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka.
One of the greatest contributions of the fair is its role in encouraging people to read books. In an age dominated by smartphones, social media, and digital entertainment, the fair provides an opportunity for readers to rediscover the pleasure of reading. Visitors can explore novels, short stories, poetry, historical works, scientific publications, biographies, children's books, and research materials. Students can find educational resources, while general readers can discover books that broaden their knowledge and understanding of the world.
The fair also provides an important platform for writers and publishers. Established authors can present their latest works, while young and emerging writers receive opportunities to introduce themselves to a wider audience. Readers can meet their favorite authors, attend discussions, collect autographs, and participate in literary and cultural programs. These interactions strengthen the relationship between writers and readers and encourage creativity throughout the country.
Another important aspect of the Ekushey Book Fair is its contribution to the publishing industry. Publishers prepare for months to release new books during the fair. The event creates business opportunities for publishing houses, printing companies, booksellers, editors, illustrators, and other professionals. Successful participation can help publishers reach new readers and promote local literary talent. In this way, the fair contributes to both cultural development and economic activity.
The fair also promotes Bengali language and national identity. It reminds younger generations that language is not simply a means of communication; it is an essential part of a nation's history, values, and collective memory. By celebrating Bengali literature and culture, the fair encourages young people to learn about their heritage while remaining open to knowledge and ideas from other languages and cultures.
However, the authorities should take effective steps to make the fair more accessible, organized, and reader-friendly. Affordable books, improved facilities, adequate security, accessible walkways, and better arrangements for children and people with disabilities would help attract more visitors. Publishers should also embrace digital platforms to reach readers who cannot attend in person.
In conclusion, the Ekushey Book Fair is much more than an annual literary event. It is a living tribute to the language martyrs, a celebration of Bengali culture, and a meeting place for knowledge, creativity, and ideas. Its significance lies in preserving the nation's historical memory while inspiring future generations to read, think, and learn. Therefore, the government, publishers, writers, educational institutions, and readers should work together to uphold this valuable tradition and strengthen the reading culture of Bangladesh.
