The Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) has strengthened security at temples, puja mandaps, key installations and coastal areas to ensure the safety of people and property during Sharadiya Durga Puja, BCG Director General Rear Admiral Md Moinul Hasan said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press briefing at a puja mandap in Mongla, he said around 3,500 Coast Guard personnel had been deployed across areas under the force's jurisdiction since the beginning of the festival, BSS reports.
Under the BCG West Zone, security has been reinforced at 144 temples and puja mandaps in Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira districts.
The Coast Guard has also intensified intelligence surveillance and launched joint operations with other law enforcement agencies to prevent untoward incidents and ensure peaceful celebrations, he said.
Special security arrangements have been made for idol immersion scheduled for Wednesday.
BCG West Zone Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon told BSS that a specialised Coast Guard diving team would
remain at immersion sites to respond to potential accidents and assist in rescue operations.
He urged people to report any untoward incident through the Coast Guard's emergency hotline at 16111, assuring them of prompt action.
The officials expressed hope that the festival would conclude peacefully and safely with the immersion of idols.
