A total of 548 meritorious female students on Sunday received pink coloured bicycles in Bogura, marking the birthday of Barrister Zaima Rahman.
State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mir Shahe Alam distributed the free pink bicycles, at a programme, to the meritorious female students at Shibganj Government Pilot Girls' High School in Bogura district, BSS reports.
According to information shared by the state minister's press secretary on social media, around 1,500 students received special mugs featuring Zaima Rahman's photograph at the programme.
Addressing the gift distribution ceremony, Mir Shahe Alam said the initiative was organised to mark the birthday of Barrister Zaima Rahman, daughter of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Dr Zubaida Rahman.
The initiative aims to promote girls' education, ease students' daily journeys to school and encourage them to continue their studies.
The state minister also arranged a free medical camp for the underprivileged people. Around 4,000 underprivileged people received eye care services from the camp.
He said that instead of holding a conventional cake-cutting celebration, barrister ZaimaRahman's birthday wascelebrated with providing humanitarian assistance to underprivileged people.
Meanwhile, eye care services and cataract surgery programmes were conducted for the second consecutive day at Aliaharat Rokeya-Sattar High School ground in Shibganj at noon.
Shahe Alam said that he has been celebrating Zaima Rahman's birthday during the rule of Sheikh Hasina as well. At that time, various humanitarian activities were organised, including prayers, food distribution among orphans, medical services and eye care programmes.
He said similar initiatives had been taken this year for the welfare of local students.
The state minister added that for the past 20 years, meals had been distributed among underprivileged people every Friday near the DewantalaMazar area, seeking the well-being of the Zia family.
He said the main objective of these initiatives was to stand beside people and work for their welfare.
Referring to the bicycle distribution, ShaheAlam said promoting girls' education was the primary goal of the initiative, adding that today's female students would shape the country's future.
Emphasising the need to ensure a safe learning environment, he said awareness must be raised to prevent child marriage and sexual harassment of girls.
He stressed the importance of collective efforts to ensure that girls could travel to school safely and continue their education. Supporting students and advancing girls' education remained the key objectives of the initiative, he said.
Criticizing Jamaat, ShaheAlam accused that the party has been engaged in deceptive politics.
He said people who had been misled by the party were now regretting their decision. He also alleged that Jamaat leaders had worn prayer caps and danced to drumbeats during the election campaign to secure votes but were no longer seen at Hindu religious festivals after the election.
ShaheAlam said TariqueRahman had undertaken various programmes, including the Family Card and Farmer Card initiatives, tree plantation, bringing healthcare services to people's doorsteps and canal excavation.
Among others, present were ShibganjUpazilaNirbahi Officer ZiaurRahman; the state minister's wife, Mir LaboniAkter; Ruposhi BD Group Managing Director Mir ShakrulAlamSimanta and his wife, Mir FariaTabassum; and the state minister's daughter, Mir Samara Sunat.
Later, a prayer was offered seeking the good health and long life of Barrister ZaimaRahman and other members of the Zia family.
