Bangladesh, US launch joint disaster response training exercise

The US Army and Bangladesh Coast Guard on Monday launched a joint exercise titled "Guardian Shark" in Chattogram to strengthen disaster response capabilities, particularly swift-water rescue and emergency medical  operations.

The exercise, scheduled to  continue until November 25, aims to enhance the operational  readiness of both forces and develop a coordinated approach to planning and responding to emergencies and crises, according to a US Embassy press release issued on Monday.

Participants will exchange best practices and undertake realistic training scenarios to improve their ability to save lives during floods, cyclones and other natural disasters.

The exercise will also help strengthen cooperation and coordination between the two forces in conducting emergency rescue and medical operations.

"Exercise Guardian Shark shows the US commitment to working with Bangladesh on shared security concerns in the region," Acting US Mission Spokesperson Mara Bird said in a statement.

She said such joint exercises would further deepen bilateral cooperation and reinforce the two countries' shared commitment to a free, open, secure and prosperous region.
