Court orders freezing Independent TV Editor's bank accounts

Court orders freezing Independent TV Editor's bank accounts

A Dhaka court has ordered the freezing of seven bank accounts held in the names of Independent Television Chief Executive Officer and Editor Shamsur Rahman and his associates.

The order was issued on Monday by the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Shahjahan Kabir, following an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

ACC Public Prosecutor Tarikul Islam said that the application seeking the freezing of the bank accounts was submitted by the commission's Deputy Director, Muhammad Zainal Abedin.

According to the application, allegations have been brought against Salman F Rahman, former private industry and investment adviser to the former prime minister and chairman of Beximco Group, and others over stock market manipulation involving placement shares and the embezzlement of thousands of crores of taka from shareholders through fraudulent activities.

They have also been accused of abusing their influence to obtain loans worth approximately Tk 36,000 crore from various public and private banks and misappropriating the funds, as well as laundering thousands of crores of taka abroad.

Subsequently, an allegation concerning the acquisition of assets beyond known sources of income and money laundering against M. Shamsur Rahman, CEO and Editor of Independent Television, was added to the investigation.

During the investigation, information about bank accounts held in Shamsur Rahman's name was obtained. The ACC alleged that he and his associates were attempting to transfer, relocate or convert the funds held in these accounts.

The application further stated that if such attempts succeeded, the objectives of the investigation could be undermined, including filing a case, submitting a charge sheet to the court and, following trial and conviction, confiscating assets derived from alleged criminal proceeds in favour of the government.

Under these circumstances, the ACC argued that freezing the bank accounts belonging to Shamsur Rahman and his associates was necessary to ensure a fair investigation and justice.
