Gas ignites during deep tube-well drilling in Cox's Bazar

Gas escaping from underground ignited during the drilling of a deep tube well near Chhoto Inani Bridge in Jaliapalong Union, Ukhiya Upazila, Cox's Bazar district, on October 27, 2026.

The incident occurred after drilling reached a depth of approximately 1,000 feet.

Immediately following the incident, two geologists from Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) were dispatched to the site. They are currently stationed in Cox's Bazar and monitoring the overall situation.

Following expert advice, the gas is being allowed to escape freely to prevent the fire from spreading. The intensity of the flames is expected to gradually decrease within approximately 15 days.

If the flames do not subside as expected, an expert team will take alternative measures, including firefighting operations and steps to stop the gas flow.
As a precautionary measure, public access has been restricted within a 100-metre radius of the incident site. The local administration has taken all necessary steps to maintain law and order.

Petrobangla, BAPEX and the local administration are continuously monitoring the situation.

Meanwhile, necessary initiatives, including geological surveys and 2D seismic surveys, are being undertaken to assess the potential underground gas reserves in the affected area.

The authorities have urged the public not to panic and requested their cooperation in managing the situation.
