'None will be allowed to operatesubstandard medical college'

State Minister for Health Dr MA Muhiton Wednesday said that,no medical college of low quality will be set up throughpolitical pressure or influence from  influential quarters.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of an 'Assessor Training' programme held at the conference room of the Bangladesh Medical Education Accreditation Council (BMEAC) in Mohakhali of the capital.

DrMuhit said, "Since assuming power, we do not endorse any new private medical college till now but there is an intense pressure from various influential circles regarding the matter. There will; be a medical college without a hospital and someone will become a doctor  without visiting patients, such a        situation cannot run simultaneously."

Almost 50 percent of the country's medical and dental colleges are focused  in Dhaka divisions but the disparity is clear in the remaining seven divisions, he added.

Highlighting disparities in medical education and its uneven geographical distribution in the country, the state minister said nearly 50 percent of the country's medical and dental colleges were concentrated in Dhaka Division.

He said clear imbalances existed in the remaining seven divisions.

He added that healthcare infrastructure must be developed through proper planning rather than following the popular tendency of demanding medical colleges in one's own district or upazila at parliamentary sessions or political speeches.

Emphasising the importance of adhering to international standards, he said the global employment opportunities for future generations of Bangladeshi doctors would shrink unless the country achieved accreditation by complying with the standards of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO).
