Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Gallery was inaugurated on October 30 at Bangladesh National Museum. The permanent gallery on the second floor of the museum displays 45 artworks and four personal belongings from the museum's collection of 807 artworks and memorabilia of the Shilpacharya. It displays a few works from Zainul's famous famine series, a majestic scroll painting Monpura, some figure studies, sketches and paintings. The gallery also offers Zainul's belongings like pen, brush and spatula and multimedia projectors to inform visitors about the master artist's life.
Curated by ASM Rezaur Rahman, the gallery has been decorated in a way to give the impression of the overall oeuvre of the master artist who has remarkable contribution to contemporary fine arts in the country. Sponsored by IFIC Bank, Bangladesh National Museum has opened the gallery in association with Drik. Finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith inaugurated the gallery in presence of cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor, Bangladesh National Museum director general Faizul Latif Chowdhury, Rabindra Sangeet singer Rezwana Choudhury Bannya, IFIC Bank managing director Shah Alam Sarwar and others.
Museum trustee board chairman and eminent artist Hashem Khan presided over the inauguration ceremony. At the centre of the gallery, the 28-feet scroll painting 'Monpura' has been hung. Zainul Abedin painted 'Monpura' after the devastating 1970 cyclone, and the painting depicts dead humans, animals and trees all laid in a way that gives the impression that a cyclone had just passed over them. The optimistic Zainul, however, paints a man sitting at the end of the scroll to suggest the fact that the human beings have the power to win natural calamity.
The gallery also displays eight charcoal sketches from the 1943 Famine sketches, which earned instant recognition for Zainul at the initial stage of his career., It also displays Zainul's famous watercolor paintings on paper and canvas titled 'Santal' and 'Ghorey Phera'. Moreover, a few prints and gouache works are also on display as testimony of Zainul's versatility in mediums.
