Pohela Falgun, the first day of spring in the Bengali month of Falgun, is being celebrated today with flowers, poems, songs and dances. It brings joys and colors both in nature and life. After the dryness of winter, new leaves start to come out again and the nature adorns the branches with new colorful flowers such as Shimul, Polash and Marigold. Especially the "Krishnachura" brings the news of spring first.
The festival-loving Bangladeshi people welcome and celebrate this day with great joy, love and in a colorful manner. The blazing red and yellow are the representative colors of Pohela Falgun. And Shahbag, also known as the 'Projonmo Chattar', becomes colorful with the color of spring. To welcome the first day of the spring, the king of season in Bangladesh, Charukola has arranged 'Basanta Utsav' at the famous Bakultala at faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University.
The day started with Motiar Rahman on sarengi and Asit Kumar Dey's classical music at 7:45pm. The whole day long festival was divided into three segments. The first part ended with a spring rally organized by National Basanta Utsav Udjapon Parishad. The organizers informed that starting from 4pm, the festival took part at Old Dhaka's Bahadur Shah Park, Dhanmondi's Rabindra Sarobar and open stage at Rabindra Sarani, Uttara.
The festival covered diverse performances like instrumental song, Basanta Kathan Porbo, Dol Khela, solo and group recitation, solo and group music performances, group dance and a special performance by native people and children. To be noted that this festiv.al has been arranged for past 22 years. Late Wahidul Haque started this festival which was later carried out by late poet Shamsur Rahman.
Pohela Falgun, first day of Spring of Bengali month Falgun, of the Bengali calendar, celebrated in Bangladesh and West Bengal and in the other Indian states, including Assam, Tripura, Jharkhand and Odisha. The first of Falgun usually falls on 13 February of the Gregorian Calendar. This day is marked with colorful celebration and traditionally, women wear yellow saris to celebrate this day. This celebration is known as Bosonto Utsob.
